What!? green skin! well, no. Maybe blue though! (be on the lookout for a post on smurfing yourself!) Greening skin refers to removing toxins from your skin care routine. There are many natural ways to take care of your skin and the ingredients can be as simple as baking soda, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar. I like to add in ‘boosters’ and include essential oils to all those other items. Our skin absorbs something from everything it comes in contact with – everything. Want to start greening your skin? Start reading, and then do. I’ll bet you have all these items in your house already.

I recently saw this blog post by Money Saving Mom about 3 homemade beauty tricks that really resonated with me. I found her Facebook page a few years ago when I mentioned to a friend that the shirt her daughter was wearing was “SUPER CUTE!” She told me about this Facebook page of a woman who searches for amazing deals and then posts about them on her page. I immediately joined. and have saved SO MUCH!

When I saw her post about beauty tricks, I immediately read it. It has practical advice about how to use simple ingredients for beauty products. You can read it here or via the link above.

Coconut oil is the base of almost all the hand creams I make at home. It has a make up similar to the oil our own skin produces and also has a small SPF! My favorite hand cream, hurting hands hand cream, is a combination of coconut oil and shea butter. I love to add in frankincense and geranium – the scents are so earthly/flowery and complement each other so well. I recently was able to get my hands on grass fed beef fat (from Springdell Farms) and added tallow into a hand cream I made. Boy was it amazing! I shared some with the people I know who are washing their hands umpteen times a day (like my chiropractor and mail carriers) and got some really great feedback on it.

I also loved Money Savings Mom‘s idea about using coffee grounds for a scrub. This could be a great mother’s day or birthday gift for almost anyone! I make mine slightly differently from how she does. My scrub includes coffee grounds, castile soap and (of course!) essential oils. Some great oil combinations for this scrub could be:
cypress and juniper for a less ‘girlie’ scent
ylang ylang and sandalwood
manuka and elmemi
peppermint (but be careful what skin this one touches! its tingley)

I’ve never tried her idea about baking soda and apple cider vinegar as shampoo. I thought this was a brilliant idea! I think I’d miss the bubbles. Have you ever tried this? What did you think?

I love how her post sparked a bunch of ideas in my head of ways I could save money and still have items in my beauty routine that are non-toxic. What ways do you employ to save money in your routine?
